8th Annual Wine Tasting and Charity Auction

People Helping People is very pleased to announce that Bob Murray, owner of the Café Escadrille, will be hosting the 8th Annual Wine Tasting and Charity Auction with all proceeds going to support People Helping People.

The Wine Tasting & Charity Auction will be held at the Café Escadrille on Sunday, February 24th from 2-5 p.m. There will be wine tasting, gourmet appetizers, live auctions and silent auctions. All this for just $50.00. Once again in an effort to make the event more comfortable to those attending this year we will only be selling 150 tickets! Also the doors will not open until 2:00 PM. Anyone who attended any of the previous events will remember that as you entered the Escadrille you were greeted with a “Glass of Champagne or Wine”. Then you entered the ballroom and the appetizers were numerous and exquisite!
People Helping People is also pleased to announce that Frank Vozzella, Branch Manager & AVP of Northern Bank has once again reached out to People Helping People and for the Sixth year will be the Major Sponsor for the Event! Also the Weiner Family owners of Dunkin Donuts have once again made a special purchase for everyone attending the event this year!

The Charity Auction will be performed by Auctioneer Steve DiOrio who promises to be entertaining and with lots of great prizes to bid on.
The Auction Items this year promise to be unique with dinners from many of the local restaurants in Burlington and tickets to many of the Boston Sporting Events.
People Helping People is the umbrella organization for the Burlington Food Pantry, the Holiday Program & Wish Tree and the Covenant for Basic Needs. These three non-profit and volunteer-supported organizations are striving to meet the basic necessities of Burlington residents who have been hit hardest by the economic downturn. People Helping People is in need for a new facility as we have outgrown our current food pantry. We would also like to expand our services which we can’t do without a larger building. So proceeds once again will go towards our goal of a new facility for People Helping People.

In 2018 People Helping People once again had a very productive year. All the members of this great organization work hard to provide for those in need throughout the year.

In 2018 the Food Pantry distributed over 207,000 pounds of food to families in Burlington. This was in increase over previous years. This past December the Wish Tree processed over 2000 gifts for children. PHP also gave the seniors at the food pantry a small gift for the holiday season. In November over 180 families in town were provided the fixings for Thanksgiving dinners.
People Helping People is extremely grateful to Bob Murray for his continued generosity to People Helping People. Bob continues to make a very strong impact on People Helping Peoples ability to help those in need these past 8 years. Bob is always reaching out to our organization to assist! This event is totally donated by Bob Murray.
Tickets can be purchased through Janet Sullivan Fitzgerald, 6 Rita Ave., sullivanfh@comcast.net (781) 244-9519, Dan DiTucci Spencer Cleaners 271 Cambridge St., & 240 Middlesex Turnpike or John & Shannon at A Whole Bunch of Flowers 326 Cambridge St., Burlington
We are hoping that this will continue to be a real community event with many residents and organizations in the town supporting our major fundraiser. Please consider attending. Remember only 150 tickets will be sold this year!

Federal and Government Workers who are Burlington Residents

The Board of Directors for People Helping People will be opening the Burlington Food Pantry to Federal and Government Workers who are Burlington residents and are not receiving their pay checks due to the Federal Partial Shutdown.

The Directors are more than happy to offer the services of the People Helping People Burlington Food Pantry to anyone victimized due to this shutdown, and will gladly continue to offer access to the resources of the Burlington Food Pantry to Federal and Government Employees and their families as long as the shutdown is in affect and until the shutdown is lifted.

The Burlington Food Pantry will require that you bring in a picture I.D., and a current utility bill to verify that you are a resident of the Town of Burlington.

The use of the People Helping People Burlington Food Pantry is a special service that People Helping People has provided in the past: like to those families negatively affected by the fire at Lord Baron apartments that displaced a lot of families, and for those Burlington residents who are Verizon Union Workers who more recently were caught without support when Verizon Union Workers were locked out of their jobs by Verizon.

If you are one of these families, please call the PHP Burlington Food Pantry and ask for Jane or Cheryl at 781-272-6625.

People Helping People Raising Funds to purchase Holiday Dinners for families in the Community of Burlington

Burlington’s People Helping People is a non-profit organization. Under the umbrella of PHP is the Burlington Food Pantry, the Covenant for Basic Needs and the Holiday Wish Tree. Over 225,000 pounds of food will be distributed in 2018 to families of the Burlington Community Food Pantry.

There are many people in need in the Town of Burlington. It could be a neighbor, someone sitting next to you at Church or perhaps at a school event. In addition to receiving their monthly food distribution in December, we would like to once again provide these families with resources to enjoy a holiday dinner with their family.

This is difficult to do without fundraisers such as the Capital Grille Raffle. People Helping People is holding their Eighth Annual Capital Grille Raffle for a chance to win a $1,000 gift certificate to the Capital Grille in Burlington (certain conditions apply). The prize, which covers dinner for six, including wine, was donated by the Capital Grille at 10 Wayside Road in Burlington

People Helping People would like to thank Managing Partner of the Capital Grill Adam Meckler for all he does to support the Community of Burlington and for his generosity with the donation.

Raffle tickets are just $20 each and can be purchased from Janet Sullivan Fitzgerald sullivanfh@comcast.net, Dan DiTucci Spencer Cleaners at 271 Cambridge Street and 240 Middlesex Turnpike, Olde Town Liquors 242 Cambridge St and from John & Shannon at A Whole Bunch of Flower Market, 326 Cambridge St., Burlington

The Tickets will be sold throughout October, November, and December. So think about helping those in need during this holiday season and purchase a $20 raffle ticket!!!! The drawing will the first week of January!

ATTENTION: MAJOR CHANGES

We are excited to share some changes in the pantry with you. The pantry will reopen on Tuesday, October 9 after having undergone a complete makeover. This will include a completely new floorplan and shopping format. Our goal is to provide you with more flexibility, a shorter wait and allow us to better meet your needs.
We sincerely hope you will like the changes we have made:

• No more appointments, come when you need food (see new hours below).
• Pick up food once a week, both fresh food and canned goods.
• Browse the shelves by yourself. Volunteers are available to help upon request. Check in upon arrival, pick out food, just follow the signs, check out when done.
• Volunteers will restock the shelves throughout distribution. Items will be replenished as needed.
• Expanded distribution hours (effective starting Tuesday, Oct 9)

Monday 11 am – 2 pm (Note: we are closed Monday, Oct 8)
Tuesday 3 pm – 7pm
Wednesday 11 am – 2 pm
Thursday 10 am – 12 pm (noon)
*Note: No changes at this time to monthly deliveries.

Do not forget that we will be conducting our annual re-registration of all clients during the month of October. When arriving at the pantry for the first time after Oct 1, you MUST bring your photo ID and 2 recent utility bills (or bank statement, etc.; dated within 45 days) to verify your Burlington residency.

Please be patient with us as we all need to adjust to the new and improved pantry operations. You may experience a longer wait time until everyone adjusts to the new systems, but we are confident that after the transition it will allow us to much better meet your needs.

Thank you,
Jane McIninch & Cheryl Barnes
Pantry Coordinators

Seniors Being Hungry is a Nationwide Epidemic

Nearly one in every six seniors in America faces the threat of hunger and not being properly nourished. This applies to those who aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from and those who don’t have access to the healthiest possible food options. The issue is severe enough that the AARP reports that seniors face a healthcare bill of more than $130 billion every year due to medical issues stemming from senior hunger.
